Nipple Piercings

Nipple Piercing Shopping Guide

Nipple piercings can be pierced in a couple different ways, but the standard nipple jewellery is a straight, horizontal barbell. They can look great on anyone, and are available in some really cool designs.

Feeling overwhelmed by all the different designs and sizes available? Check out our nipple piercing shopping guide for more information.

Nipple Piercing Sizes

A straight barbell is the most traditional kind of nipple jewellery. The standard thickness for nipple piercings is 1.6 mm.

The length can vary from person to person, but the most common length is 16 mm. Smaller nipple piercings can be around 12 mm and larger nipple jewellery approximately 19 mm in length.

Other designs, such as nipple shields, need a longer bar length to have enough room left for the shield or dangly jewel.

Shield Jewellery Measurements

The bar length is measured from the wearable length of the bar, between the balls when they are screwed on.

The length needed can vary from person to person. The most common length is 16 mm, but the lengths can also vary between 12 and 19 mm.

However, the wearable length of a nipple shield is measured from the space left on the bar when the shield is on. With nipple shields, the bar length will likely be much longer than the actual wearable length inside the shield.

As you can see, the hanger takes up some space from the bar length. Nipple shields with a 16 mm long bar might only leave around 12 mm wearable length inside the shield.

Some designs take up less of the bar length, but most nipple shields can be considered quite small. The same goes for dangling nipple jewellery, depending on the design.

In general, there is a lot more choice in nipple shields and dangling nipple jewelry for smaller nipples.

Other Nipple Jewellery

Apart from the straight barbell, there are more piercing types that can fit a nipple piercing. You can try out different designs and create a whole new nipple jewellery look.

A curved barbell can be subtle and comfortable to wear. Below are some more alternatives to consider.

Nipple clickers are easy to use and comfortable to wear. They are more subtle compared to nipple shields. Nipple clickers often come decorated with crystals or other fun designs.

Piercing rings can also be used for a nipple piercing. There are different types of rings available, such as circular barbells or segment rings. We recommend to have a look at our hinged segment rings for your nipple.

Nipple Piercing Materials

The nipple is a sensitive part of the body. Picking jewellery in the right material for you is important. Below are some different material options.

316L Surgical Steel

316L Surgical Steel

Nipple jewellery is often made of this material. It contains trace amounts of nickel and may tarnish when brass is added. However, you can often upgrade your surgical steel bar for titanium, which we recommend.

This implant-grade titanium is the best you can get. It's hypoallergenic, 100% free of nickel, and it won’t discolour. The design choice is slightly limited, but titanium is a great option for everyday wear.

14 Kt. Gold

14 Kt. Gold

14 kt. gold is another beautiful option with exceptional quality. Yellow and Rose Gold are also great options for sensitive skin as it is nickel-free. When properly maintained this material will continue to keep its shine.

Light, colorful, and comfortable. Acrylic nipple barbells are very affordable and also nickel-free. This material is great for daily wear and, therefore, should be in your collection.

Nipple Piercing Aftercare

The right aftercare is essential for a new nipple piercing. The skin of the nipple is quite sensitive, so use just a normal saline solution or Salt Spray to clean the piercing. Use products that contain tea tree oil when suffering from minor inflammations or irritated skin.
