Piercing Retainers

Piercing Retainer Shopping Guide

Piercing retainers can be useful for several occasions. Your employer might require you to hide your piercing during working hours. Going to the hospital for an operation or an MRI-scan can also be a situation when a piercing retainer is needed.

In this shopping guide you can find information about picking the right retainer for your piercing.

How to pick the right Retainer

Retainers come in a variety of piercing types. You can find retainers for the most popular piercings. See if there is a retainer available for your specific piercing type. If you cannot find an exact match, we recommend going for an alternative piercing type that would be suitable for your piercing.

Depending on your needs, you might be able to find different piercing jewellery that fits your needs. There are usually some alternatives to retainers within your specific piercing type categories.

The correct size of your Retainer

When you order a piercing retainer, choose the same size that you are currently wearing. Especially the bar thickness should be the same. However, if you can't find the exact length you normally wear, you could also wear a slightly longer bar for a short period of time.

If you are not sure what size you need, you can find more information about measuring under the different piercing categories. Measure your current piercing to make sure you get the right sizes before ordering.

Piercing Retainer Materials

Although most people opt for piercing retainers made of bioflex, there are also some made of 316L surgical steel. Learn more about both below.

Bioflex

Bioflex

Bioflex is the most common material for a piercing retainer. It is hypoallergenic and lightweight. Retainers entirely made of this material are free of any metals and therefore suitable for an MRI scan. Some retainers have more acrylic in the mix, making them less flexible but a bit sturdier. Most of such piercing retainers come in a more transparent colour. This also makes them perfect for hiding your piercing if that is required. Bioflex is free of any nickel as well.

316L Surgical Steel

Whether to hide your piercing or to help keep it from closing, some people prefer steel over plastic. We have a few 316L surgical steel retainers for septum piercings. There is also a 316L surgical steel retainer available in different colours, making it a fun alternative piece of jewellery to wear. This is a high-quality stainless steel. It does contains small amounts of nickel, making it not suitable in case of a nickel allergy.
