Silicone - Material Guide

Silicone is an excellent material but not often used for Piercing Jewellery. We only have Plugs and Tunnels made of this material.

In this Material Guide we look into Silicone and find out why it is so great.

Introduction to Silicone

Silicone is a rubber-like substance. It is incredibly flexible. In fact, it is the most flexible material you can find when looking for Plugs and Tunnels. Silicone is also soft and lightweight. These properties offer the possibility of making very thin Tunnels. These are also known as 'Skin Eyelet' tunnels.

These Tunnels almost feel like a second skin. Because of the soft Silicone, they are very comfortable to wear. There are also Silicone Plugs and Tunnels that are thicker. These also remain very flexible and lightweight.

Silicone Explained

Chemistry is required to create silicone. Silicones consist of an inorganic silicon-oxygen with two organic groups attached to each silicon center. Silicones can be synthesized with a wide variety of properties and compositions. The variation in consistency results in end products ranging from liquid gels to hard plastic.

Plugs and Tunnels from Silicone vary in hardness but are overall soft. This aspect, combined with the material's lightweight, results in absolute comfort when wearing such Piercings. Another notable aspect is that the material is not sensitive to discolouration at all.

"Plugs and Tunnels from Silicone may be the most comfortable to wear."

Great news for people sensitive to metals. Silicone is 100% free of Nickel. The only downside is that the material is so soft that it's not suitable to put in right after stretching your ears. You will need a more robust material that allows your skin to heal after stretching to the next size.

Maintenance Instructions

Plugs and Tunnels made from Silicone require little to none maintenance.

You can use alcohol to disinfect the Jewellery before putting it in, without it affecting the Silicone. If you like to use soap instead, that is also no problem for this material.

The only thing to be aware of is that Silicone may dry out at some point. This may lead to the material becoming more fragile to tearing. To prevent this, it is advisable not to leave your Plugs and Tunnels in direct sunlight for long periods.
